PERCUSSION CONCERTO

“Percussion has always been my first love in the musical world. The quartet was exciting, but taking it to the level of a full concerto was another thing altogether. A huge challenge.” —Elfman

Currie is one of today’s premiere percussionists, and it’s no wonder that Elfman wanted to write the work for him. The work needs a soloist with the agility to move quickly among the instruments that are positioned on either side of the conductor’s podium. At Friday’s concert, Currie handled the logistics with ease and gave a tour de force performance of the 30-minute work, which provided a showcase for his remarkable sense of rhythm as well as his sensitivity in expressing moods and emotions. - Edward Reichel, Utah Arts Review

Elfman Percussion Concerto
Copland Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo
Gershwin An American in Paris

JoAnn Falletta conductor
Colin Currie percussion

Danny Elfman is a legend of movie music, the man whose scores for Batman and Edward Scissorhands fused rock ‘n’ roll with orchestral technicolour to dazzling effect. His Percussion Concerto is a gripping way to get to know Colin Currie – as one critic put it, “surely the world’s finest and most daring percussionist”. And conductor JoAnn Falletta – an American in Liverpool – delivers a side-order of high-kicking tunes and fascinating rhythms, courtesy of Aaron Copland and George Gershwin.

Post-concert Question Time – starts 15 minutes after the concert ends (in the Music Room) with JoAnn Falletta and Colin Currie.

The ravishing renegade Rebecca Clarke explores both modern concepts and ancient styles with her duo-concertante Dumka. Lastly, the autobiographical String Quartet No. 1 (“From My Life”) of Bedřich Smetana, father of Czech nationalist music, closes our season with one of the most beloved works in the chamber repertoire.
